Research & Development

At Edgewise Environmental, we believe research and development to be paramount in advancement and innovation. We strive to create new services, products, and processes that are rooted in science. We believe that collaboration is key to progress and growth.

We are currently collaborating on over 3 million dollars of research and development projects focused on marine mammal detection, integrated AI solutions, and acoustic monitoring of a proposed Marine Protected Area (MPA).

Collaborative Project to Study Species at Risk on the West Coast of Newfoundland

Edgewise Environmental is participating in a three-year research initiative to address threats to at-risk aquatic species in Western Newfoundland’s Gros Morne region and Southwest coast.

This project, funded by the Government of Canada’s Nature Fund for Aquatic Species at Risk (CNFASAR), focuses on understanding and protecting vulnerable marine species and habitats in the Gros Morne region and southwest Newfoundland.

Along with Atlantic Healthy Oceans Initiative (AHOI), Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Dalhousie University, this project brings together academic and private sector partners to gather new information on a variety of important but vulnerable marine species, investigate the health of key coastal habitats, and reduce the threat posed by marine debris in coastal waters.

A New Era in Marine Mammal Observation: Edgewise Environmental and Whale Seeker

Edgewise Environmental and Whale Seeker are partnering to develop Möbius Observer, an AI-powered, real-time marine mammal detection solution. This collaboration is designed to strengthen monitoring efforts and support mitigation requirements for marine projects.

At the heart of the initiative is Whale Seeker’s cutting-edge AI technology, which uses drone imagery to detect marine mammals in real time. This system significantly enhances the ability to monitor marine wildlife in their natural environments and delivers immediate alerts to observers.

Building on this technology, Edgewise Environmental is developing the protocols, policies and training required to use Möbius Observer . This initiative is designed to train and equip mitigation and monitoring personnel with the latest skills, integrating drone and AI technologies into their fieldwork. The program aims to improve the accuracy, speed, and effectiveness of marine mammal monitoring.
